History of Silver Lake: Old Dan Wadsworth (a lumberjack) was a hermit around 1915 who took to the woods for good after the death of this wife. Dan was relocated to Silver Lake after the state bought the land and he died at the ripe old age of 90.
History of Whitehouse: Crossing the West Branch of the Sacandaga you would approach the shoreline and yell across to the "white house" on the opposite bank. If luck had it someone would appear and rowed over to get you. If no one came your took off the boots and waded. This is not hard in the Summer, but crossing in springtime melt is extremely hazardous (if not impossible).
Currently there stands a suspension bridge to make your trip less wet, plus the white house no long stands on a chimney of the past.
Piseco History: A hermit named Alvah Dunning who listed hunting and fishing on the 1850 census spent his life on Piseco Lake. He was the inventor of the Lobb Spoon which is still used today.
