Welcome to Back to the Basics. We have identified that there is a great need for individuals both young and old to learn the basics of firearm safety. This course is designed to teach you about rifle and or shotgun safety (we also offer a bow and arrow course to meet your individual needs). Here you get a choice to either use one of our firearms for training or your own.
You will be instructed during this course on how to properly transport, load/unload, clean, sight-in and discharge your firearm safely and effectively. The safety techniques that you require to hunt safely and confidently will be addressed. During your basic training; tracking, locating game, field dressing, out packing out will be emphasized. Tree stand erection and placement, ground blinds, scent technique, compass and map reading, and orienteering will be meet.
Upon arrival you will be given a course outline; and upon completion of your course you will have built the self confidence and knowledge base needed to easily pass your DEC hunting safety course.
Hunter safety courses have now grown with multiple rules and regulations; the content has become difficult and complex especially for many novices who attempt to obtain their licensure. Therefore, this course will prepare you for what is now required.
Please keep in mind that this class is not only for the hunter or novice, it is for all who would like the need for exposure and training in any firearm handling. Not only will you leave with the above background in firearm safety, but you will also beginning to experience all that the backcountry of the Southern Adirondacks have to offer.
Here you will not visit a rifle range; you instead will be guided into the wilderness backcountry for your experience. You need to experience a hands-on of where you will ultimately be spending your time (not in a classroom or rifle range, but in the field.
Your field experience is located in a remote area that will not only act as your classroom, but also enhance your Adirondack Wilderness experience.
