Dennis arrived to Back To Basics on Friday, April 30th after speaking with us the evening before about a possible Basic Survival Course.  Normally we cannot accommodate an excursion so quickly, but we had the supplies on hand to be able to accommodate Dennis' request.  Dennis took the option of two weekends instead of the full week course.
Ken & Dennis arrived in the Adirondacks for rest, relaxation, survival courses, and some corruption
Dennis drove to Back To Basics with his friend Ken.  Dennis was to go into the wilderness, while Ken opted to kick-back and relax.  We did try to convince Ken to join the expedition but to no avail.  The night of their arrival we placed them in the Whitetail Run Yurt.  The first evening of their stay we went over the so called introductions, what Dennis expected from his survival course, gear preparation, and what tomorrow was to bring.
After that packing that evening. Dennis & Ken returned to the yurt to start an outdoor campfire. Relaxation was needed prior to tomorrow's trail departure.

Prior to our Survival course departure course. Everyone gathered for a group photo.
The morning of May 1st we all meant at the main house for breakfast and a run down of what the day would bring.
We reached the trail head at Nine Corner Lake and prepared Pop for his excusion.

We left Back To Basics and headed for the local store for last minute supplies.  We arrived at the Nine Corner Lake trailhead and donned our packs.

Dennis had the duty to sign us all into the register at Ferris Lake Wild Forest at the Nine Corner Lake Trailhead. (Safety first)!
Heading into Nine Corner Lake for a weekend of Basic Survival with Dennis.
Nine Corner lake is approx a 1.0 mile hike in.  Dennis had chosen to do his Basic Survival Wilderness Course in the field, and we happily accommodated his wishes. (Kim was very happy about the excursion, but didn't appear so here).
Pop too also carries his own, but seems to find every mud puddle and water source along route.

Heading along the fisherman's path to the back end of Nine Corner Lake we encountered two gentleman begging for bug spray.  The black flies were out in full force and the gentleman were up to do some bouldering for the day before heading to Christian Camp.  We kindly fulfilled their request of bug spray.

Dennis prepares his ground sheet for camp at Nine Corner Lake.
Dennis was eager during all aspects of his survival course, and comprehended basic survival with ease.
During this process of Dennis' Course we discussed the selection of a campsite and the needed preparations along with some leave no trace rules and regs.
Upon reaching our nights destination, it was time to set up camp (priorities first).
Dennis began preparing his ground sheet and his camping area.

We instructed Dennis that once the ground sheet was placed it was time to check it out, prior to placing his tent. Dennis had chosen an excellent location for the evening.

Being May, the area was filled with less people then in the summer months, but the blackflies did keep us company.  Dennis took to the camp set up and his new surroundings with ease.

However, Popcorn needs to be taught a little more.
Popcorn selects his campsite in the firepit at Nine Corner Lake. NOT A GOOD CHOICE.
Dennis picked an excellent location for his campsite, however, Pop did not.  It might be fine for the moment but once we start the fire in the firepit, it might pose a problem.
After camp was set, we decided on a few minutes of rest and relaxation to take in the views.

Kim & Dennis at the large boulder on Nine Corner Lake.
We did reach the point, based on orienteering, and would check the compasses upon our arrival back to camp.  When we reached the point, their were two small boys fishing with Mom & Dan.  We asked them about the fishing and they replied they had not caught a thing, but they did manage to catch an 85 lb Golden Retriever, before we departed.
When we left the point we ascended a large boulder along our travels back to camp. We were very upset to find multiple gun shells on the large rock. We cleaned up the area and again packed it out. NEW FISHING TECHNIQUE WE GUESS!!!!

Dennis did have a favorite spot.  One large rock that overlooked the lake.
The views could not be taken for granted. They provide such a peaceful atmosphere that we sat for hours taking in the terrain.

Our first goal was to return to the large boulder area that we had visited yesterday.
After camp was packed, Dennis led the way to begin the compass, map, and orienteering skills taught yesterday.

Dennis should be proud of his newly acquired skills and success, but still considers the most important aspects. VAST AND REQUIRES RESPECT. Dennis never once took the terrain or surroundings for granted. He attended faithfully to leave no trace and appreciated what the wilderness had to offer, but also respected the hardness of the land. An important aspect that many seem to loss during their travels.

Prior to departure, Dennis photographed a wonderful shot of the Basics.
"ONE STEP AT A TIME"

Upon our arrival to Back To Basics, Dennis unpacked and prepared for his trip home, but the main questions of the day was where was Ken. Ken moved to Crow's Nest Yurt prior to our departure, but was no where to be found.

Upon everyones return to the homestead. All seemed pleased with their getaway weekend.
Dennis finally did locate Ken at the neighbors house.  We learned upon our arrival that they had kidnapped Ken for an excursion to Hap's Tavern, a bon-fire, and a pizza pie dinner.  SO MUCH FOR REST AND RELAXATION!
Dennis and Ken did arrive back to their homes safety upon leaving Back To Basics.  We knew we would see Dennis again next Saturday to finish his Survival in the Adirondacks, but Ken was going to visit his family for the weekend.
Dennis spent time at roadside and at the entrance site preparing his new destination.
Dennis did return to finish his course on May 8th, 2004.  He arrived at Back To Basics about 9:45 am.

We were already packed and ready to go.  We drove Dennis to roadside along Canada Lake, so he could get a view of where we were headed.  Dennis was given the run down of the day along with the expected terrain.  Dennis'  job is to bring US - the guides to our new destination.  A remote lake in the middle of nowhere called Negro Lake (a sparkling lake that stands on it's own, that many cannot seem to locate - even the locals).  This area is one of rugged terrain and does require good compass, orienteering and map reading skills, but we felt Dennis was ready to take on the task into this remote area of the Adirondacks.   NO TRAILS HERE IT BE BUSHWACKING!!!

Pop was also ready to go, but we had to tape him up, since he tore his pack.

Dennis hesitated at the top of one of the ridges (which was a good thing), a very problem area. The ridges turn. We took a moment to rule out what we knew was incorrect in order to move on. Usually results in a large backpacking mistake, but Dennis took the time to figure it out before moving. JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dennis did a wonderful job setting up camp for the evening, eventhough we gave him new gear to work with.
We provided Dennis a different tent for this expedition, and set up with the new gear only resulted in one small flaw which was fixed quickly (done purposely by the guides to let you know that all gear is different).  Dennis would not of learned this lesson, until he began acquiring his own gear.  The point being know what your working with prior to departing - Dennis couldn't in this case, but we know it's now etched.  The best teacher is that simple mistake.
We pick a small campsite just below the knoll to break the wind, we were anticipated storms tonight.
Once the shelters were assembled it was time to gather wood for the evening fire.

Dennis began showing Dennis his techniques learned for an emergency shelter in the wilderness. Dennis (instructor for the shelter), learned great survival tactics while in the military and was more than happy to show Dennis his rustic techniques.
We had asked Bill & Dennis, prior to Dennis' arrival, to consider joining us at Negro Lake.  Bill & Dennis do a wonderful demonstration of Natural Emergency Shelters.  They arrived in the late afternoon just as we finished setting up camp for the evening.
